What is cloud computing?
- It is a large group of interconnected computers.
- It is document centric, not PC centric.
Basic types of cloud computing
1) IaaS: Infrastructure as a Service
-provies offer of storage or serve usage
-provides grids or clusters or virtualized servers, networks, storage and systems software
-vendor & its product: Amazon & Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud)
2) PaaS: Platform as a service/ cloud OS
-consists an operating system or a computer language
-vendor & its product: Google & Google App Engine
3) SaaS: Software as a service
-software: a customer can access online without having to download it
-the most widely known and widely used form of cloud computing
-vendor and its product: Google & Google mail/docs or Skype
Advantages of using Cloud Computing
- money-saving
- high performance
- low IT infrastructure costs
- fewer maintenance issues
- low software costs
- instant software updates
- increased computing power
- unlimited storage capacity
- increased data secuirity
- improved compatibility between OS
- improved compatibility in document formats
Disadvantages of using Cloud Computing
- easy group collaboration
- a constant and high-speed Internet connection required
- slow processing speed
- insecure data storage
- universal access to documents
- latest version availability
- lack of back-up function
Issues concerning Cloud Computing
1) technical issues
- Hundreds or thousands of individual computers or servers have to be purchased or otherwise commandeered, linked together, and managed.
- In addition, feature-rich web-based software has to be developed, and served to users with 24/7 uptime.
- All of this takes significant resources, which smaller companies might not possess.
- How do companies make money offering cloud computing services?
- If a company can charge for its cloud services and storage, how should those services be priced?
- how secure is the cloud storage?
- If you save your web-based document in a cloud system, are you guaranteed that your document will still be there when you need it—and that it won’t be accessed by unauthorized users?
- Switching platforms is difficult at best, and if web-based applications aren’t fully compatible with existing file formats, the move to cloud computing simply won’t happen.
Applications of Cloud Computing
- Apple's iCloud
- Skype
- Google+
- Amazon cloud player
